Team Singapore's male golfers, who clinched silvers in the team and individual events at the SEA Games here in Vientiane, are a popular lot, going by the attention they have been receiving.
Screaming Girls
Immediately after the results of the competition were announced, the boys were surrounded by screaming girls who wanted autographs and pictures. While signing an autograph (pictured), team member Jonathan Leong joked, “I really need to practise my signature. It really isn’t close to being consistent.” Looks like he also has wit to match his popularity - and golfing skills.
Close Contest
He teamed up with Johnson Poh, Lam Zhi Qun and Jonathan Woo to finish just behind the Thai quartet of Wasin Sripattranusorn, Thanyakon Khrongpha, Wongsakorn Choowong and Pawin Ingkhapradit. The contest was close. In fact, our boys thought they had won on countback after coming from behind to share top spot with Thailand.
Silver For Johnson
But there was a sudden death play-off instead and they just missed out on the much coveted gold. “Winning silver was a bitter pill to swallow especially since just doing one shot better would have earned us the gold,” said Jonathan Leong. There was, however, some consolation as Johnson also earned a silver in the individual event.
