Vientiane came to a standstill on Wednesday night (Dec 8) as Laotians celebrated the opening ceremony of the 25th SEA Games. Declaring a holiday, the capital city sparred no efforts in ensuring a smooth running of the grand event.
Burst Of Fireworks
The spanking new National Stadium Sports Complex Main Stadium was filled to its capacity of 20,000 people. Laotian President Choummaly Sayasone declared the Games open, accompanied by a burst of fireworks. The highlight of the night included the spectacular lighting of the Games flame, with a member of the Laotian archery team shooting a flaming arrow into the cauldron. Also, colourful performances showcased Laotian history and culture as the Singapore contingent (pictured) took their place alongside officials and athletes from other participating nations. The night ended with a magnificent fireworks display that wowed the spectators both within and on the outskirts of the stadium.
Top Honours
When the show ended, it marked the beginning of the competition for the days ahead. As the main sporting action kicks off today (Dec 10), all eyes in the Singapore camp will be on sports like shooting and swimming where our chances for gold medals are high. Our paddlers, who started their matches days before the opening, will continue to compete for top honours.
