National paddlers Feng Tianwei, Sun Beibei, Yu Mengyu and Wang Yuegu will lend a touch of star quality to the National Table Tennis Grand Finale now going on at Toa Payoh. They are among the more than 300 paddlers taking part in the meet.
World Class
For world class paddlers like Feng and Wang, this meet is a far cry from what they are used to. Normally, they take part in international competitions featuring world class stars from countries like China and South Korea. Here they need only to contend with local players, many of whom will find facing them a daunting prospect.
National Champion
Yet they are not taking the meet lightly. For instance, Feng, who won a silver at the Beijing Olympics and three golds at last year's SEA Games in Laos, is aiming to be a national champion by the time the meet is over next Saturday. Winning a title here will mean a lot to her as she has never been a national champion since she has never played in this tournament. This is despite the fact that she is ranked world No. 6 in the women’s singles.
Impressive Credentials
The other top players will have their own goals. They too come with impressive credentials. Together their presence will certainly add prestige to the national championships. The intense competition among the top players will also mean excitement for the many table tennis fans in Singapore.
