(High Jumper Clears 1.79m To Break 13-Year-Old Record)

Athlete Michelle Sng (pictured here with a team mate) has done it, finally. Yes, the 18-year-old, who has been trying to break Yu Long Nyu's 13-year-old record of 1.74m in the women's high jump, has achieved her goal after trying so hard for the past two years or so.

Next Step

She cleared 1.79m at an international junior meet in Beirut. In May 2004, she had shown much promise for bigger things when she rewrote the national Under-20 record with her 1.70m effort.

Now that she has claimed the national mark, the next step is to aim for a medal perhaps at next year's SEA Games. For perspective, the bronze medallist at last year's SEA Games in the Philippines cleared 1.83m.

More immediately, Michelle, a former student of Raffles JC, hopes to beat the qualifying mark (1.82m) for the World Junior Championships in Beijing in August.
