OLYMPIC BOOST
(Seven Athletes, One Dream)
Shuttler Ronald Susilo, shooter Lee Wung Yew, paddlers Li Jiawei and Zhang Xueling, and sailors Roy Tay (pix), Chung Peiming and Toh Liying have received a big boost as they set their sights on donning national colours at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Training & Competitions
They are the seven Singapore athletes awarded the Olympic Scholarships by the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Solidarity. This is a sub-committee which promotes universal Olympic participation.
The scholarship was started in 1989 for the 1992 Barcelona Games. In 2003, Susilo and fellow shuttler Li Li became the first Singaporeans to earn this award.
Worth more than US$20,000 for each athlete, the award will be used to fund training programmes and for competitions. The seven winners from Singapore were among 36 nominated by the Singapore National Olympic Council.
