By Jason Cai & Joshua Tan
Singapore's women shuttlers have achieved their target of making the quarter-finals of the Uber Cup now going on in Sendai, Japan. They beat New Zealand on May 1 after losing earlier to South Korea and Germany.

Important Tie

The tie against the Kiwis was very important for the Singapore side as they needed to win to achieve their quarter-final target. They delivered, beating their opponents easily.

Li Li started the tie well for Singapore when she defeated Rachel Hindley 21-16, 21-14. Xing Aiying (pix) too shone with her 21-8, 21-11 win over Renee Flavell. Jiang Yanmei sealed the victory for us when she beat Michelle Chan 21-11, 21-19.

Against China

Next up for our girls: a quarter-final tie against the overwhelming favourite, China. The Chinese will prove too strong.

They include the world's top two women's singles players, Zhang Ning and Xie Xingfang, as well as the top doubles pair of Gao Ling and Huang Sui. But our girls hope to benefit from the experience.

Japan, Holland, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Germany are the other quarter-finalists.
