The Opening Ceremony of the 4th ASEAN Para Games took place yesterday at the grand His Majesty The King's 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium.
Participating athletes and officials from the 11 countries took their turns to do the traditional march-past amid the warm cheers and applause from an appreciative audience.
Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin, President of the ASEAN Para Sports Federation, highlighted in his speech that he hoped to create a greater awareness of disabled people so as to integrate them not just in the realm of sports but into mainstream society as well.
The highlight of the ceremony was the relay of the ASEAN Para Games torch that culminated in a spectacular display of grand fireworks. Performers in traditional costumes of the different countries participated in a mass dance display that thrilled the audience tremendously.
The games will run from 21 to 26 January 2008.
