Singapore attained a good showing in the third day of the 4th ASEAN Para Games with a haul of 1 Gold Medal, 2 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze Medals.
The Boccia Team achieved ASEAN Para Games history for Singapore with a medal tally of 1 Silver Medal and 1 Bronze Medal. Jeralyn Tan fought bravely against the world ranked 58 athlete from Thailand in the Finals of the Individual Event (BC2) but failed to rally from behind after she succumbed with a final score of 1:5 and had to settle for the Silver Medal. In the BC4 category, Oh Boon Keng attained the Bronze medal with a promising display. These are the first ever ASEAN Para Games Boccia medals for Team Singapore.
Team Singapore swimmers accounted for 1 Gold Medal and 1 Silver Medal. Theresa Goh came up tops in the Women-200m Freestyle in a race that she led from start to finish. Theresa clocked a timing of 3 minutes 24.20 seconds but failed to break her own record.
James Leow added another medal to his personal tally by winning a Silver Medal in the Men-50m Butterfly with the timing of 33.27 seconds. This was also James' personal best timing in this event. In a closely competed and highly charged race, James was trailing the other three swimmers for most of the race. However, he managed to put up a late show with a last explosion of power that got the capacity crowd on their feet. James managed to storm past the two swimmers ahead of him at approximately the 30m mark and reached the ending blocks in 2nd place just after Anurak Srinarong from Thailand.
Ng Xiu Zhen managed to clock her personal best timing of 3 minutes 57.69 seconds in the Women-200m Freestyle for her category.
Seasoned wheelchair marathoner, Dr William Tan achieved a Bronze Medal in the Men-200m (T53) final with a timing of 32.15 seconds. Dr Tan competed with two athletes from Thailand with Pichet Krungget eventually finishing with the Gold Medal at 26.87 seconds, a new ASEAN Para Games record.
Wheelchair racer Eric Ting made a spectacular improvement to his personal timing in the Men-200m (T52) final with a timing of 46.47 seconds. In astonishing fashion, Eric managed to shave nine seconds off his previous personal best of 55.65 seconds. Wheelchair racer Norsilawati Binte Sa'at also achieved her personal best timing of 52.03 seconds in the Women-200m (T53) final.
Badminton players Tay Wei Ming and Muhammad Ashik defeated their opponents from Malaysia in their doubles' match today with a score of 21-18, 21-16 and reached the next round that will be played tomorrow. ASEAN Para Games debutant Tay Wei Ming will also be in action tomorrow in the Men's Single's Quarter-final against Vietnam.
Team Singapore's medal tally stands at 3 Golds, 4 Silvers and 3 Bronzes.
