22 January 2008, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand
Swimmer Ng Xiu Zhen brought ASEAN Para Games glory to Singapore as she blazed first to the ending blocks in the women's 100m Freestyle and won the Gold Medal with the timing of 1 min 51.53 seconds. James Leow added a Silver medal to the tally and rewrote his personal best timing in the men's 100m Freestyle with a time of 1 min 7.04 seconds.
In Athletics, Nazariah Bte Amadini won the Silver medal in the women's 100m dash with the timing of 18.08 seconds. It was a particularly satisfying feat for the 36 year old veteran athlete who made much improvement to her previous timing.
It proved to be a satisfying day as well for Team Singapore's Boccia player, Jeralyn Tan as she advanced to the finals of the Boccia Individual event in her category. By doing so, Jeralyn has guaranteed Singapore of a medal in the Boccia competition. She achieved this by defeating Malaysia 7:0 in the preliminary round and bested Vongsa Wacharaphon from Thailand in a tense semi-final that had to be decided by a tie break. Scores after regulation were tied at 5:5 and subsequently, Jeralyn managed to prevail with a 0:1 score. This is the first time in our brief Boccia history that Singapore has reached the finals of any international competition. The Gold medal will be decided tomorrow.
Boccia player Goh Ta Lang succumbed to Thailand with a score 0:11 in his semi-final match in the individual event. He will compete for the Bronze medal in the 3rd/4th placing match tomorrow.
Singapore's medal tally stands at 3 Golds, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronzes.
