BEYOND SPORTS
(Water Polo Yip Ren Kai Reaches Out)
By Lynn Koh & Jason Cai
For water polo player Yip Ren Kai, 2005 was a hectic year, what with the SEA Games in the Philippines and all the travelling in between. He kicks off his 2006 schedule with the coming Commonwealth Water Polo Championships in Australia and hopes to make it for the Asian Games team at the end of the year. Even so, he has personal goals beyond sports. Major Meets For 2006, we've got the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships coming up this month and the Asian Games in December. These are the two major competitions for us. In between, there will probably be a few training trips overseas. Against Pros Ultimately, I just hope to do well for the two competitions. Things won't be easy. For the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships, for example, we will be up against professional teams such as Australia and Canada. We are going into it with an open mind. Hopefully, we can achieve good results. Community Work While I want to continue doing well in my sport, I also wish to pursue my interest in community work. I just hope to give a bit back to the community by reaching out to the less fortunate in our midst. Family Time Spending quality time with my family would also be an area I plan to work on. 2005 was a hectic year for me, what with the SEA Games and all the travelling in between. That left me with little time for my family. Next year, since the two major competitons are pretty far apart, I hope to spend more time with my loved ones. Marketing Course Also, I intend to do a course in marketing. Though it may not be related to Bio Technology, which I studied in Australia, I have interest in this area. And of course, venturing into a new field will give me a chance to improve and upgrade myself. Yip Renkai's involvement in community outreach this year will see him share some of his experiences studying overseas (in Australia) with China students pursuing their education in Singapore.
