Singapore's polo team (picture) gave their all but it was not enough to upset favorites Malaysia as they were beaten 3.5 to 9 in the SEA Games gold medal match. However, they were consoled by their silver medal which was also the final medal to be won by Team Singapore at the 24th SEA Games in Thailand.
Good Showing
Said assistant team manager Wee Tiong Han, "A lot of people thought we were going to be beaten easily, but we put up a good showing." Singapore started the game with a 1.5-goal advantage as they had a handicap of four compared to Malaysia's six. However, their advantage was erased quickly as Malaysia raced to a 3 to 1.5 lead.
Early Goal
Singapore started the second chukker brightly with an early goal from captain Satinder Garcha, but their opponents showed their class to score three more goals. Malaysia's lead of 3.5 proved too much to overcome. Instead, it added two more goals in the third chukker and one in the fourth. Singapore's other goal came in the third chukker, with Garcha once again the scorer.
Tough Out There
Garcha said, "It was very tough out there. The Malaysians were very good, and better trained then us. Despite that, we gave them a fight, and limited the score to a 5.5 goal difference. This is the lowest goal difference for any team against Malaysia in this tournament." Also the Singaporeans exceeded their expectations with their fine showing. Said Wee, "We aimed for a gold or silver, but expected a bronze. I'm glad that we won the silver."
