Athletes Shine In Weiqi At SEA Games
By Joshua Tan

While much was made of the success of Team Singapore (picture) at the recent SEA Games in Thailand, the good showing of our athletes in Go (Demonstration Event) has gone unnoticed. In reality, they did well to bring home two gold medals and a silver.

Top Performers

In all, eight players were sent by the Singapore Weiqi Association for the competition. Among the top performers was Kang Zhan Bin who won gold in the men's individual event. Tan Jia Cheng and Yang Kaiwen also shone with gold in the mixed pair event. The silver came from Zhang Xiang in the men's individual event. Other members of the team were Karen Pooh Chuan Ling, Cheng Mun Yi, Ong Siong Hwai and Seow Yin Yi.

Greater Recognition

Their fine performance meant a lot to Mr Tan Teng Chuan, SEA Games' judge and President of the Singapore Weiqi Association. He called for greater recognition of the players. For instance, they, he said, should be recognised as part of Team Singapore - the way Go players from countries like Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia were part of their countries' contingents.
