YEAR 2007
Singapore Athletes Reach Out
By Joshua Tan
Rugby player and President's Scholar Ervin Yeo gave talks on his experience balancing sports and studies as well as on his years at Yale University in USA. Fencer Nicholas Fang, an Oxford University graduate working as a Straits Times journalist, shared about the art of speaking and writing well.
Good Year
These were among the Team Singapore athletes who took part in our editorial team's outreach programme among the young in 2007. It was indeed a good year for our national athletes with interests in areas like youth outreach, whether through sharing sessions, writing, photography or other means. Indeed, efforts were made to engage our athletes both as a way to tap their diverse talents and to enable youths to know them better.
Editorial Projects
For example, runner Kenneth Khoo was involved in a few editorial projects. He was engaged as one of the writers for an athletics book called Lasting Strides and also contributed articles to a new magazine, A-sian Athletics. Thrower Tay Jiun Lin, an aspiring photographer, was given the chance to cover the departure of the Singapore SEA Games contingent.
Overseas Education
Water polo player Yip Ren Kai (picture), who studied in Australia, and sprinter Tang Yue Han, who is studying at Harvard, engaged NIE students with their sharing regarding overseas education. Triathlete Elaine Chan and tennis player Lee Wei Ping were among those selected for a project highlighting athletes' non-sports interests. May the new year bring more opportunities for our athletes beyond the sporting arena.
