TALENTED SIBLINGS
(Matthew Christian & Sister Sasha Shine For Singapore)
By Joshua Tan
Singapore has earned its first international gold medal in wakeboarding, thanks to fine performances by young wakeboarders Matthew Christian and his sister Sasha (pix) who both showed top form at a recent meet in Australia. Strong Performances Taking part in the 2006 Asian Wakeboard Championships held in Yarrawonga, Matthew, 16, won bronze in the men's event, behind South Korea's Kim Yongil (1st) and Hong Kong's Wan Ka Choi (2nd). Sasha, 13, was second, behind China's Chen Li Li, in the women's event. Their strong individual performances, when combined, helped to earn Singapore a gold medal in the team overall event, ahead of Hong Kong (second) and China (third). Singapore narrowly missed the gold in 2004 when it was edged out by Korea. Youth Development Responding to the latest success, Derek Leong, Vice President of the Singapore Waterski & Wakeboard Federation, paid tribute to our young athletes. "We have placed plenty of emphasis on youth development over the past few years, and our faith in our young riders has finally paid dividends," he said. Team Singapore
Apart from the talented Christians, other members of Team Singapore were Yunos Bin Yusop, Terry Goh, Eliza Loo and Vivien Chong.
