BRONZE FOR SHOOTERS
 
Good Start For Trio of Gai Bin, Ho Yung Yi & Poh Lip Meng

Team Singapore's challenge in the shooting competition got off to an encouraging start when our marksmen managed to grab a bronze medal and narrowly missing another one in the opening day of the 2007 SEA Games' shooting competition.

Combined Score


The bronze came from the 10m Air Rifle trio of Gai Bin, Ho Yung Yi and Poh Lip Meng who had a combined six-series total of 1,718 points, just four points behind Vietnam and Thailand who finished with gold and silver respectively. Gai, Ho and Poh fell back to third place right from the first series with their combined score of 286, while the Thais surged ahead at 290, boosted by Janitch Panitchpatikum's perfect 100. But the Singaporeans finished the competition comfortably perched in third place, some 28 points ahead of fourth-placed Myanmar.

Narrow Miss

Fan Xiao Ping narrowly missed a bronze medal in the Women's 25m Pistol when Thailand?s Warinya Butcha edged her by 0.9 points. Fellow Singaporeans Peong Siew Shya and Dawn lee Chong Ee finished 14th and 15th, respectively. Other Singaporeans in action on Tuesday were Lim Chearong and Zhang Jingna who were placed 11th and 13th respectively in the Women's 50m Rifle Prone.

What's Ahead


Meanwhile, Gai will aim for gold on Wednesday in the finals of the Men's 10m Air Pistol. He was in second place at the end of the qualification series, four points behind Vietnam's Tranh Quoc Cuong. Other Team Singapore shooters in action here in Thailand include Mohd Zain Amat and Choo Choon Seng (pix) as well as young talents like Zhang Jin and Jasmine Ser.
