Focus On Sports Like Cricket & Netball
By Jason Cai
Athletes in less established but emerging sports here like cricket, netball, triathlon and gymnastics are creating news in their own way. Anish Param, for instance, was declared the Best Batsman in the Asian Cricket Council Under-19 competition.
Cricket
The Singapore captain, a student at Raffles Junior College, shone in matches against countries like Thailand,Oman and Qatar. Despite his individual success, he gave credit to his team mates for helping Singapore finish a creditable fifth at the tournament.
Netball
In netball, Hong Weizhen, 19, will join the national squad for next month's Five Nations Cup at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall. The Nanyang Polytechnic student was part of the U-19 team that played in Australia's Arafura Games earlier this year. Singapore, which is preparaing for November's World Championships in Auckland, will face countries like Sri Lanka and Northern Ireland in the Five Nations Cup.
Triathlon & Gymnastics
Meanwhile, local triathlon made history when Singapore organised the Aviva Ironman 70.3 last Sunday. Comprising a 1.9km swim, a 90.1km cycle and a 21.1km run, the event took place around the Central Business District and featured some world class triathletes. On their part, athletes in gymnastics (pix) are gearing up nicely for a fine showing at December's SEA Games in Thailand.
