DINNER WITH HUNKS
(TS Fan Meets Water Polo Guys)
By Peggy Boey
Edited by Joshua Tan

Team Singapore has gone right to the ground, so to speak, with a range of activities aimed at bringing athletes closer to the public. For example, an event was held at Suntec City Mall in early August to rally Singaporeans' support for our athletes. Then there were the dinner dates. We bring you here fan Peggy Boey's write up on her meeting with our water polo guys.

Out Of Water

For the very first time I see our very own fishes out of water, namely Alvin Tan, Yip Ren Kai and Paul Tan - all national water polo players. Having dinner with these three hunks was definitely rewarding in terms of understanding more about our athletes and their training.

Other Interests

Besides being passionate sportsmen, they have other interests. Alvin is a coach for both swimming and water polo. Ren Kai is currently working in the Workforce Development Agency (WDA). Paul, who's the youngest among the three, will be going to Australia for further studies.

Tough Training

Commitment for them isn't just about coming for training three or four times a week - like it is for those of us in school teams. Instead, they train more than 10 times a week at Toa Payoh Swimming Complex. And when major competitions are around the corner, they step up their training. When asked about the role of supporters, Alvin put it well when he said "it is always nice to see our own people in a crowd", especially when competing overseas.

NOTE

As part of the Milo Cheers on Team Singapore Signature Drive campaign, we offered the public unique opportunities to engage in dinner dates and training sessions with sporting stars. Our first-ever Team Singapore Wish List yielded some interesting results, with fans keen in, among other things, dinner dates with athletes like shuttler Kendrick Lee and sailor Roy Tay. Items in demand included Lionel Lewis' soccer jeresy and Li Jiawei's table tennis bat.
