GOOD WEEK
(TS Athletes Shine In Bowling, Track & Field)
By Jason Cai
The past week or so has been good for Team Singapore, with many athletes putting up fine performances. Leading the way was bowler Jazreel Tan who clinched silver at the World Women's Bowling Championships Masters final in Mexico, just behind America's Diandra Asbaty. Depth Of Talents Along the way, she upstaged big names like Malaysia's Esther Cheah (first round), Sweden's Helen Johnson (quarter-finals) and Korea's Kim Yeau Jin (semi-finals). Jazreel's performances showed the depth of youth talents in the Singapore team which also included young faces like Cherie Tan (pix), Jasmine Yeong-Nathan and Sabrina Lim. Relay Record Singapore's 4x100m women's team - Lee Yan Lin, Ng Ze Teng, Amanda Choo and Ann Siao Mei - also did well when they broke the national record with a time of 46.98 seconds at the Singapore Open Track and Field Championships. Finishing third behind Thailand and Japan, they shaved 0.02 sec off the old mark set by Heather Marican, Gan Bee Wan, Glory Barnabas and Sheila Fernando way back in 1973. New 100m Mark On her own, Amanda rewrote the 18-year-old national 100m record when she clocked 12.21 seconds in the final. This time eclipsed Prema Govindan's 1989 national record (12.23). This effort earned her fifth spot, behind Thailand's Supavadee Khawpueak (11.90), Japan's Mayumi Watanabe (11.91), Philippines' Sheena Atilano (12.10) and Japan's Masako Tanaka (12.13). Meanwhile, the men's 4x100m relay team of Gary Yeo, Poh Seng Song, Kelvin Kang and Mohamed Yusof clocked 40.56 secs to beat the SEA Games qualification mark.
