By Joshua Tan

There were some fine performances recently by Team Singapore athletes, including cuesports' Peter Gilchrist (pix) who now holds the world record for a break in billiards. At the New Zealand Open Billiards Championship, he racked up 1,346 points to eclipse the previous record of 1,276 set by India's Geet Sethi in 1992. He was playing against Kiwi Ross Exley.

Impressive Outing
In another impressive outing, our 28-strong contingent at the Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Shanghai shone in a variety of sports. Among the gold medallists were swimmers Joanne Tai (25m breaststroke) and Ahmad Salim (50m breast) and runner Cheng Siew Peng (800m).

Table Tennis
In table-tennis, Gao Ning did well to make it to the quarter finals of the singles event in the Liebherr's Men's World Cup. Ranked 11th in the world, he was defeated by world No 1 and top seed Wang Hao 2-11, 11-13, 13-11, 4-11, 3-11. This performance by Gao Ning exhibited his vast potential.

Good News

Meanwhile, there was good news for some athletes who were earlier not selected for the coming SEA Games in Thailand. The women's 4x100m relay team of Lee Yan Lin, Ng Ze Teng, Amanda Choo and Ann Siao Mei will now be going for the competition. Others who gained a place after initial rejection included the Muay Thai team and the men's artistic gymnastics team.
