TOWARDS SEA GAMES
(TS Gets SEA Games Boost With Success In Fencing & Table Tennis)
By Joshua Tan
A total of 360 Team Singapore athletes have earned the selectors' nod for December's SEA Games in Thailand, including many youth athletes from sports like sailing, swimming and gymnastics. Meanwhile, in a boost to our SEA Games chances, athletes from sports such as table tennis and fencing tasted recent success.
Table Tennis
The paddlers clinched two titles at the Taiwan Open, with the experienced Li Jiawei (pix) leading the way with gold in the women's singles after beating teammate Feng Tianwei 8-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-7, 9-11, 11-5. To win this title, Li had to overcome Germany's world No 21 Wu Jiaduo and Hong Kong's Zhang Rui on her way to the final. Feng enjoyed success in the Under-21 singles event when she defeated Germany's Zhenqi Barthel 11-9, 11-2, 11-9, 11-9 to win her first title on the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Pro Tour.
Fencing
On their part, the women's foil team of Wang Wenying, Ruth Ng, Tay Yu Ling and Serene Ser came in joint third with Japan at the Asian Fencing Championships in Nantong, China. Hosts China was first followed by South Korea. This result is a moral booster as our fencers head for the World Championships to be held in late September and early October in St Petersburg, Russia.
