BEST BET
(Triple Jumper Stefan Tseng Heads For World Meet)
By Joshua Tan
Triple jumper Stefan Tseng (pix) is the Singapore team's best bet for a good outing at the fifth International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Youth Championships held in the Czech Republic city of Ostrava.
In Contention
He is joined by sprinters Valerie Pereira (200m), Balpreet Kaur (100m) and Loh Guo Pei (200m), and long jumper Matthew Goh. The talk is that Stefan , if he finds his best form, may well be in contention for a medal. The 17-year-old - who broke Francis Nathan's 15.24m record last year with his 15.52m effort - is Singapore's brightest prospect to win a medal.
World Youth Top 10
The only Singapore competitor ranked in the world youth top 10, he made news last year when he broke Francis Nathan's 15.24m record with his effort of 15.52m. Earlier this year, he jumped 15.28m at the National Junior Championships. Such results have placed him alongside other top juniors in the world like Cuba's Ernesto Kindelan (15.84m) and Russia's Gennady Chudinov (15.45m). His coach Valeri Obidko from the Singapore Sports School is confident he has what it takes to match the world's best in his age group. Watch this space as we bring you the latest.
