Singapore Skater Hopes To Be Olympic Torch Bearer
By Laura Reid,TS Volunteer Writer
National Figure Skating Champion Sarah Paw, 15, who is based in Beijing, is trying to make a mark not with her skates but with her words. She is vying for a much-coveted spot as a torchbearer for the 2008 Olympic Game by taking part in an essay competition.
Passionate Essay
Olympic sponsor Lenovo is holding the contest for foreign nationals living in Beijing. Eight people will be chosen on the basis of their essays which deal with the meaning of being a torchbearer. In a passionate essay, Sarah wrote about her belief in the values of Olympism. "Even though we are only teenagers (or younger!), we all have dreams of representing our country at the Olympic Games. Even though we are young, we share the Olympic dream, the values of fair play and the importance of learning from the journey."
Winning & Losing
As a competitive athlete, Sarah said she had experience in both winning and losing. She noted that most people cheered for the champion but not for all the competitors. "In my opinion, this is not the true Olympic way. Everyone's efforts should be applauded and respected for the incredible work we put in to get there." Sarah added that she wanted to carry the torch as "a symbol of my salute to everyone who strives hard not matter what...the Olympic Torch symbolises their willpower and commitment to their chosen sport."
