By Joshua Tan

In the past week, Team Singapore athletes in badminton (pix), sailing and fencing put up commendable performances, starting with Ronald Susilo's showing at the Philippine Open. The shuttler advanced to the quarter-finals by beating third-seeded Bao Chunlai of China 21-14, 21-8.

Badminton

Though he lost eventually to Indonesian world No 11 Sony Dwi Kuncoro 14-21, 13-21, the Singaporean can certainly take pride in his performance.

Fencing

The fencers shone at the annual Asian Schools Fencing Championships held at the Republic Polytechnic. In all, they clinched 10 gold medals, beating school teams from seven participating countries.

Sailing

In sailing, Victoria Chan was placed a commendable sixth after nine of 12 races in the Girls' Radial event at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in Kingston, Canada. This continues a trend which has seen Singapore sailors holding their own even when competing against some of the world's best.
