DOUBLE JOY
Trap Shooters Win Two Gold Medals
By Christopher Ong & Peh Siong San in Bangkok
Singapore's Mohd Zain Amat led out a roar of triumph as he shot the clay pigeon that gave him the gold for the individual trap event at the SEA Games here in Bangkok. Running over to compatriot Lee Wung Yew, he asked, "Oh my goodness, did I just win it?" Nail Biting End Indeed, it was a nail-biting end to the final as the two Singaporeans and Thailand's Kitcharoen Atig tied on 125 points. This led to a sudden-death shoot-out where the first to miss would be eliminated. Wung Yew was the first to fall, leaving Mohd to line up against Kitcharoen. Said Mohd, "Initially, I went there without pressure. Just shoot. But when Wung Yew went out, it became a die-die-must-win situation!" Thankfully, when Kitcharoen missed soon after, Mohd held his nerve to hit the target and clinch the gold. Gracious In Victory He was gracious in victory, saying, "The gold could have gone to any of the three of us." Still elated several hours later, he said that he had not expected to win the gold given that the trap is not his best event. Instead, he specializes in the double-trap, which begins tomorrow. Perfect Day His gold medal made it a perfect day for the trap shooters, who had also clinched the team trap gold earlier in the day with a combined total of 318 points, beating the Philippines with their score of 312. However, Singapore had looked on the verge of missing out on the team gold when shooter Choo Choon Seng shot 14 out of 25 clay pigeons in round four, allowing second-placed Philippines to close to four points. But with the aid of the team psychologist, Choo recovered and got out of the "pit-hole".
