(Singapore Thinks Big In Sailing & Netball)
By Joshua Tan

In different ways, our sailors (pix) and netballers are hoping to make their mark - and at the global level, no less. The sailors are taking part in the Sailing World Championships in Cascais, Portugal, which will serve as a qualifying event for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Meanwhile, Singapore has submitted a bid to the International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA) to host the 2011 World Championships.

Vying For Honours

Among the sailors vying for honours are Maximilian Soh, Koh Seng Leong, Victoria Chan and Loh Man Yi. Also in action are Roy Tay,Chung Pei Ming, Terence Koh, Xu Yuanzhen, Teo Wee Chin,Benjamin Tan,Toh Liying and Deborah Ong. Apart from the event in Cascais, Portugal, the sailors can also look forward next year to the 470 World Championships in Melbourne and the Laser World Championships in Terrigal, New South Wales.

Selling Singapore

In netball, the task is to sell Singapore as an ideal host for the 2011 World Championships at the coming IFNA's world congress in Auckland. The other city vying to be host is Melbourne. If Singapore succeeds, the Indoor Stadium is expected to be the venue for the event, which will cost at least US$500,000 to stage.
