GO, GIRLS, GO
(Inline Hockey Team Will Represent Singapore At World Meet)
By Angela Chng, Team Singapore Volunteer Writer
Come July 2007, a team of girls extremely passionate about inline hockey (pix) will be representing Singapore at the FIRS World Championships in Bilbao, Spain. Just how passionate are they about the sport? Angela Chng, a member of the team, sheds some light.
Adrenaline Rush
What is the attraction of inline hockey that drives us - a team of 13 girls - to save up our money (we're talking about $3000 per player) to just play hockey in Spain? Siyi puts it well when she says simply, "(Inline) Hockey Rocks and I want to be a Hockey Star!". Jokes aside, most of us agree that it is the speed and intensity of the game that creates an adrenaline rush like no other. It is also certainly an honor to represent our country.
Young Sport
If you've never heard of inline hockey, you're not alone. It is still a relatively young sport. But, in terms of popularity, it is starting to gain momentum in Asia. Many residents in Tampines, however, are no strangers to the sport as it hosts the only purpose built Inline Hockey Court in Singapore, which is located next to the Tampines Sports Hall. To catch a hockey match, you can witness the on-going Rollersports Singapore Drafted League every Sunday from 5 to 7pm until the 27th of May when the finals will be held.
Going Online
This year, the team is tapping on the Internet to raise fund and spread awareness about inline hockey. For example, the girls have set up a website to blog. The journey has not been easy. Being pioneers of the sport (in participating at the World Championships), they have basically formed their own committee to manage the logistics, training and preparation for the trip to Spain. It is their strong determination to overcome obstacles that will make this journey possible.
Visit www.hockeycircle.net/teamsingapore to meet the team or even leave a message for the girls.
