(No Final For Shuttler Ronald Susilo But He Has Done Well)
By Joshua Tan

There would be no dream final for shuttler Ronald Susilo whose superb run at the Aviva Open Singapore has ended following his semi final loss to Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana today (5 May).

Too Strong

Ranked world number 24, the Singaporean found his Thai opponent, ranked world number 11 and victor over top seed Lin Dan of China earlier in the tournament, too strong and lost 21-13, 21-15. In the other semi final, China's Chen Yu upset Peter Gade of Denmark 21-15, 23-25, 21-17.

Solid Wins

Despite the defeat, Ronald can hold his head high. He had scored three solid wins. First, he beat Malaysia's Lee Tsuen Seng 21-16, 21-15. Then he edged out Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kuncoro 21-13,21-10. This was followed by a 21-13, 16-21, 21-10 win over team mate Kendrick Lee who had earlier stunned World No 3 Chen Jin of China with an impressive 16-21,21-16, 23-21 win.

Other Highlights

Overall, China, not unexpectedly, enjoyed sucess in the various events. For example, in the women's singles, Xie Xingfang and compatriot Zhang Ning will contest for the title in the final. The world's top seeded men's doubles pair Fu Haifeng and Cai Yun also showed form with their defeat of Indonesia's Candra Wijaya and America's Tony Gunawan. But Thailand's Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam prevented complete Chinese domination when they beat Xie Zhongbo and Zhang Yawen in the mixed doubles.
