IN THE LIMELIGHT
(Top Honours For Bowler Remy Ong & Swimmer Tao Li In Singapore Sports Awards)
By Mark Koh Singapore's top athletes were honoured for their fine performances at the ballroom at Swissotel the Stamford last night (June 21), with bowler Remy Ong (Sportsman of the Year,pix) and swimmer Tao Li (Sportswoman of the Year) clinching the highest honours.
Winners All
Also basking in the limelight were Sportsboy of the Year Colin Cheng (sailing), Sportsgirl of the Year Vanessa Yong (shooting) and Coach of the Year Zhang Yongqiang (sailing). Other winners included the women's table tennis players, who won the Team of the Year (Event) award, and shooting's Vanessa, Adrienne Ser and Jasmine Ser who garnered the Junior Team of the Year (Event) title. The past wasn't forgotten. Former sprinting star C. Kunalan was honoured with the 2007 International Olympic Council's Sport and Promotion of Olympism trophy.
Excellent Year
Gracing the occasion were President SR Nathan and his wife as well as Singapore National Olympic Council president and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean. Praising the athletes, the minister said, "Last year was an excellent year for Singapore. In fact, in 2006 we proved we are capable of greatness in sports. At the two major games of the year, the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and the Doha Asian Games, we set new national records and won more medals than we ever have in our history." Others present at the event, for over 500 Team Singapore athletes and guests, included Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan and Teo Ser Luck, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports.
