JASMINE WINS GOLD
Gold & Silver For Shooters
|
By Peh Siong San & Christopher Ong in Bangkok
In a fine display of fighting spirit, shooter Jasmine Ser Xiang Wei (picture) scored an incredible come-from-behind triumph in the women's 10m air rifle individual event to win SEA Games gold in Bangkok today (1 Dec).
Overcoming Odds
The youngster had started the event trailing Thailand's Tavisri Kusuma by two points after the qualification round. But she overcame the odds to win by two points, with 494.1 points compared to Tavisri's 492.1. The win was all the sweeter as Jasmine and teammates Vanessa Yong Yu Zhen and Adrienne Ser had missed out on a medal in the women's 10m air rifle team event. On her victory, the newly-crowned SEA Games champion said while it was the highlight of her career this far, credit must go to the whole team. "This may be an individual gold. But to us, we feel happy as one," she said.
More Success
There was more success for Team Singapore as we also clinched silver in the 25m centre-fire pistol team event for men, losing only to an inspired Vietnam team. Our shooters On Shaw Ming, Poh Lip Meng and Gai Bin finished with 1723 points, 12 behind Vietnam. Thailand earned the bronze with a score of 1719. Said On, "I think the silver is not too bad."
