Updates In Golf, Badminton, Athletics, Swimming
In a reflection of Team Singapore's success in its emphasis on youth development, golfers Quincy Quek and Johnson Poh, shuttler Gu Juan and sprinter Calvin Kang made news this past week with some fine performances. Meanwhile, swimmer Tao Li (pix) secured a deal with air courier company FedEx. Here's a quick look at their feats.
Quincy Quek He was crowned the top amateur of the Barclays Singapore Open, ahead of Anthony Fernando of the Philippines. Overall, he was placed joint-33rd, edging out some pros, including seasoned team mates Lam Chih Bing and Mardan Mamat, who was disqualified after the opening round.
Johnson Poh He bagged an ace on the eighth hole during the Youth Programme League Finals at the Laguna National Golf and Country Club's Masters Course. Then he won the inaugural Tay Cheng Khoon Eagle Award for being the programme's most outstanding performer. Gu Juan She showed fine form at the World Junior Badminton Championships in New Zealand, making it to the last four before bowing out to third seed Wang Lin of China 14-21, 14-21. The Singaporean, seeded 12th, had earlier knocked out Scotland's Linda Sloan, the seventh seed, in the fourth round. She was also part of the team that beat defending champions Malaysia 3-2 in the third-place play-off. Her win over Lydia Cheah in the women's singles earned us a crucial point.
Calvin Kang He clocked 10.55 secs in the 100m sprint to clinch the gold medal at the Sri Lanka Open. With this fine run, the 17-year-old schoolboy is the fastest Singaporean this year. His time was faster than the SEA Games bronze-medal mark of 10.57 recorded by Indonesia's Suryo Agung Wibowo.
Tao Li She secured a two-year deal with air courier company FedEx aimed at helping her in terms of training, expenses for overseas competitions as well as education costs. This arrangement will certainly boost the Asian Games 50m butterfly champion's preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
