RONALD'S ON A ROLL
(Singapore's Top Shuttler Enters Semi Finals Of Aviva Open)
By Joshua Tan

It was Singapore vs Singapore as Ronald Susilo (pix) took on compatriot Kendrick Lee in the quarter finals of the Aviva Open Singapore Super Series men's singles at the Indoor Stadium. In the end, Ronald prevailed, winning 21-13, 16-21, 21-10.

Credit For Kendrick

But Kendrick too deserved credit. Earlier in the tournament, he had stunned World No 3 Chen Jin of China with an impressive 16-21,21-16, 23-21 win. Ronald beat Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kuncoro 21-13,21-10 to earn his encounter with Kendrick.

Thai Opponent

Up next for him in the semi final is Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana who defeated the No. 1 seed and World No 1, China's Lin Dan. The meeting will be significant. Ronald will be looking for revenge as Boonsak was precisely the player who beat him in the quarter finals of the 2004 Athens Olympics. In the other semi final, Peter Gade of Denmark, who edged out team mate Kenneth Jonassen, will meet China's Chen Yu, who beat Malaysia's Wong Choong Hann.

More Action

In the women's doubles, Singapore's Jiang Yanmei and Li Yujia, the No. 8 seed, entered the quarter finals but lost to Korea's Lee Kyung Won and Lee Hyo Jung 11-21, 11-21. In the women's singles, the semi finals will feature China's Xie Xingfang against team mate Xu Huaiwen while another Chinese Zhang Ning takes on Japan's Eriko Hirose.
