YOUNG SAILORS ARE SET FOR TOP HONOURS
By Mark Koh
Singapore's 25-strong sailing contingent at next month's South-east Asia Games in Thailand will include some youngsters who are among the favourites for gold medals. Leading the way are members of the Optimist team, namely Rachel Lee, Russell Kan, Luke Tan, Daniella Ng and Darren Choy.
Youth & Experience Except for Darren, the others were part of the team that won a silver in July's World Championships in Italy. So they are expected to excel in this event at the SEA Games. But they won't have things easy as hosts Thailand and Malaysia are likely to offer stiff competition. Apart from these young sailors, the Singapore team will include some seasoned campaigners. Among them is captain Koh Seng Leong (pix), a silver medallist at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha.
Top Honours Singapore's sailors have traditionally excelled at the SEA Games. Increasingly, they are becoming a force at the Asian level and sometimes even world stage. Though the team heading for Thailand will exclude some of our biggest names, we have enough depth to still be true contenders for top honours.
