SET FOR A SWEEP
Singapore's Paddlers Are Ready To Dominate
By Al R Dizon

After the brilliant showing by the Republic's shooters in Bangkok, it's the national paddlers' turn to show their ware when the 24th SEA Games table-tennis competition begins Monday (3 Dec) at Klang Plaza Jomsurang Department Store in downtown Korat.

Preliminary Stage

First up for our paddlers is the preliminary stage of the team competition, where the Republic is heavily favoured to contest and win both gold medals during the finals on Wednesday (5 Dec). Action for the singles and doubles events begin on Friday (7 Dec).

The men's team is led by 2007 Asia Cup champion Gao Ning and also includes Yang Zi, Pang Xue Jie, Cai Xiao Li and Jason Ho, while the women's team is bannered by veteran Li Jia Wei who is supported by Wang Yue Gu, Yu MengYu, Sun Bei Bei (picture) and Sharon Tan Paey Fern.

Seven Golds

A total of seven gold medals are at stake in this year's Games - men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, men's and women's team, and mixed doubles. In the 2005 SEA Games in the Philippines, Team Singapore won six of the seven gold medals at stake, with only the men's singles gold proving elusive.
