SET FOR GLORY
Good Mix Of Young Blood & Experience
|
By Felix Tan Wei Xin
The 25-strong sailing contingent might comprise many SEA Games debutants, but expect them to put up strong performances when the sailing event begins on 8th December. With an average age of 18, a total of 16 sailors and two windsurfers will make their SEA Games debut this year at Pattaya, where the sea sports are held.
Young Blood
The youngest member of the team is 13-year-old Darren Choy Wong Loong (Optimist Team Racing). To prepare for the competition, an intense six-day boot camp was held for the sailing team at Changi. This unique camp mimicked conditions (right down to strong winds and urine tests) so the young sailors are geared up for whatever might be thrown at them next week.
Experienced Sailors
Besides the youth talents on display, there are experienced sailors to lend weight to the fledgling team. They include Roy Tay Junhao and Chung Pei Ming (pictured here with team mates), who have already qualified for the Beijing Olympics 2008 in the 470 category, and Koh Seng Leong (Laser standard). They are expected to produce quality performances to set an example to their young team mates. But, for this SEA Games, the focus is clearly on the younger sailors.
