SOME GAIN, SOME LOSS
(Paddlers Wang Yuegu & Li Jiawei Shine In Doubles At World Championships)
By Joshua Tan Despite valiant efforts, Singapore's top paddlers Wang Yuegu and Li Jiawei (pix) are out of the prestigious women's singles event at the Liebherr World Table Tennis Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, but are still in the running for honours in the doubles event. Doubles Delight In the singles competition, Yuegu, ranked world No 8, did well to enter the round of 16 but lost to South Korea's world No 12 Kim Kyung Ah, losing 11-8, 3-11, 7-11, 3-11, 9-11. Jiawei, the world No 7, found the going tough against world No 52 Lee Eun Hee in the round of 32, losing 9-11, 6-11, 9-11, 13-11, 12-14. In the women's doubles, the Singapore pair will meet Chinese top seeds and defending champions Zhang Yining and Wang Nan in the semi-finals.
Clean Sweep
Not unexpectedly, China, led by stars like Zhang Yining and Ma Lin, is dominating the competition and seems to be on track for a clean sweep. Already, it has secured two gold medals with all-Chinese finals in the mixed doubles and men's doubles.
