SWIM TEAM 2007
Singapore's Swimmers Get Ready For Challenge In Korat
By Mark Koh

The countdown for the SEA Games in Thailand begins and among the most closely watched athletes must be our swimmers. For a start, this year's competition will see the absence of former swim queen Joscelin Yeo and seasoned team mates like Mark Chay and Gary Tan.

SEA Games Experience

Instead, the team is made up of mainly young faces. Among them, some - like Tao Li, Quah Ting Wen (picture), Bryan Tay, Leonard Tan and Mark Tan - have a bit of SEA Games experience and in fact have gone on to compete at a higher level. Tao Li, for example, won gold at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha.

Fresh Faces

Others are literally fresh faces. They include names like Russell Ong, Zach Ong, Nicholas Tan, Ng Tze Kang, Nigel Lim, Shanna Lim and Lynette Lim. Among them, Lynette is arguably the most exciting swimmer to have surfaced in recent years. Based in US, she made big news earlier this year when she broke Asian Games champion Junie Sng's longstanding national record in the women's 800m free. In Korat, she will be among our top medal contenders - alongside the likes of Tao Li and Ting Wen.

Setting An Example

Giving the team the experience it needs are swimmers like Nicolette Teo, Jeffrey Su and Marcus Cheah. Nicolette, for instance, is now the most seasoned member of the team. She will be looking forward to good performances in events like the 100m breast and 200m breast so as to set an example for her less experienced team mates.
