SEA Games Updates For Badminton, Bowling, Swimming
By Joshua Tan
Shuttler Kenrick Lee's preparations for the coming SEA Games in Thailand received a boost recently when he claimed the men's singles title at the US$50,000 Dutch Open. In the process, the 22-year-old defeated Polish top seed Przemyslaw Wacha (in the final) and Malaysian second seed Lee Tsuen Seng (in the semi-finals).
First Triumph The title marked the Singaporean's first triumph in the Grand Prix series since he won the US Open in 2004. In the final, he kept his calm despite the pressure to win 20-22, 21-11, 21-18.
Gearing Up Meanwhile, the bowlers too are gearing up for the SEA Games with the recent announcement of the team. Among the younger faces included are Jasmine Yeong-Nathan, Justin Teng, Amanda Ng, Carl de Vries and Cherie Tan (pix). They will be joined by established bowlers which includes 2002 Asian Games gold medallist Remy Ong.
Big Names The swimmers too are looking forward to the SEA Games. To help in their build up, Singapore is hosting the second leg of the Fina World Cup. The only Asian stop in the seven-leg series, the US$102,000 event will feature some of the biggest names in swimming, including Olympic champion Natalie Coughlin of USA.
