WILL BOWLERS END DROUGHT?
Keglers Are Prepared & Ready To Shine
By Joshua Tan

Singapore's bowlers, who have done exceptionally well at the Asian and international levels, are hoping to improve their modest track record at the SEA Games when the competition gets underway in Bangkok between Dec 8 and 14.

Not Just Remy

Leading the way are veterans Lee Yu-Wen, Remy Ong and Jennifer Tan but newer faces like Cherie Tan, Jazreel Tan and Jason Yeong-Nathan (picture) are expected to shine too. The last time Singapore won in bowling at the SEA Games was in 1999 when Lim Zhong clinched the men's singles and the all-events title in Brunei. Since then, our keglers, for all their fine performances at the Asian and world levels, have not delivered gold at the SEA Games. At the 2005 competiiton in Manila, they won two silvers and two bronzes.

Reversing Trend

The talk this time round is that Singapore bowling will reverse this odd trend here in Bangkok. To end this drought, the bowlers have been training hard. The 12-member squad underwent an eight-week programme to improve their game. Nothing has been left to chance and the squad even made a trip to Bangkok in October to visit the SF Strike Bowl, where the competition will be held.

Young Talents

While stars like Remy and Yu-Wen, both Asian Games gold medallists, will provide the leadership, hopes will also be placed on the young talents making their SEA Games debut. Indeed, Jasmine Yeong-Nathan, Cherie Tan, Justin Teng, Carl Jan de Vries and Amanda Ng are hardly here just for the experience. They are medal hopefuls in their own right. Jazreel, for instance, may be only 18 but she was runner-up at the recent World Women Championship in Mexico.
