WINS IN ROUND 1
(Shuttlers Ronald Susilo & Kendrick Lee Shine At Aviva Open Singapore)
By Joshua Tan While our male shuttlers enjoyed some success in the early stage of the Aviva Open Singapore now taking place at the Indoor Stadium, their female team mates found the going tough. Leading the way for the local guys in the tournament's opening round were Ronald Susilo and Kendrick Lee (pix). Double Delight Ronald beat Malaysia's Lee Tsuen Seng 21-16, 21-15 to earn a meeting against Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kuncoro, who defeated China's Chen Hong 21-11, 9-21, 21-17. On his part, Kendrick did well to edge out Malaysia's Tan Chun Seang 21-13, 21-12 to earn the right to play China's Chen Jin. Losses For Ladies The Singapore girls, however, could not cope with their opponents in their opening singles matches. Li Li, the 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, lost 15-21, 23-25 to Holland's Judith Meulendijks while young Xing Aiying succumbed 13-21, 15-21 to Germany's Xu Huaiwen. Stars To Watch The US$200,000 (S$303,000) Singapore Open, the first event to offer qualifying points for next year's Olympics, will continue with stars like China's Lin Dan, Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat and Denmark's Peter Gade.
