SUCCESS FOR PADDLERS
Li Jiawei, Gao Ning & Yang Zi Shine In Chile
In the absence of the all-conquering Chinese, Singapore's paddlers made their mark at the Chile Open, with Li Jiawei showing the way with the women's singles title. Gao Ning (pic) and Yang Zi too did well with their victory in the men's doubles final. Sweet Revenge Jiawei, the top seed, defeated Kim Kyung Ah 6-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-7, 11-7. It was sweet revenge for the Singaporean as the South Korean had denied her a bronze medal in the Athens Olympics four years ago. The win was also a boost for Jiawei, ranked world No 8, as she had lost to compatriot and world No 6 Wang Yuegu in the recent Brazil Open final.
Doubles Action
Gao Ning and Yang Zi did well in the men's doubles final, defeating Hong Kong's Cheung Yuk and Li Ching 11-6, 11-5, 11-7, 5-11, 11-2. There was no further success for Jiawei, however, as she and partner Sun Beibei lost 9-11, 15-13, 5-11, 11-8, 5-11, 5-11 to Hong Kong's Jiang Huajun and Tie Yana in the women's doubles final.
