(Yip Pin Xiu Breaks World Record In The Pool)
By Joshua Tan Swimmer Yip Pin Xiu, 16, did Singapore proud at the recent U.S. Paralympic Swimming Trials when she rewrote the world record in the 50m back (S3) with a time of 1:00:80. This means she has joined her more illustrious team mate Theresa Goh as a world class athlete. Latest Feat In the heats of her event, Yip broke the decade-long record with a time of 1:01:55 before achieving her latest feat. "I did not expect to break the record this early yet," she said. So she was understandably thrilled about her achievement. In 2006, Theresa returned from the same competition with the world record in 200m breast (SB4). Foreign Entries The U.S. Paralympics Swimming Trials for people of all types of disability serve as an opportunity to field the best swimmers in America to represent U.S.A. in the Paralympic Games. The 2008 version attracted many foreign entries, including those from Mexico, Singapore, Norway, Peru and Brazil. Apart from Theresa and Pin Xiu, Singapore was represented by Ng Xiu Zhen and James Leow . They were accompanied by three officials, namely Mr Jayaseelan Gurunathan (team manager), Mr Danny Ong (head coach) and Mr Ang Peng Siong (coach).
