WELL DONE, PART 1
(Athletics Shine In Various Sports)
IBy Joshua Tan

Team Singapore athletes have been doing us proud with fine performances in recent competitions. Leading the way are sailors Low Wen Chun and Jonathan Chew who did well in a meet in Holland. Not to be outdone, paddler Li Jiawei (pic) has also shown top form. Gymnast David-Jonathan Chan, bodybuilder Tong Chin Wee and the shuttlers have also made the news. In Part One, we look at sailing, table tennis and gymnastics.

Morale Booster

Sailors Low Wen Chun and Jonathan Chew did Singapore proud by clinching the Hobie 16 crown at the Dutch Youth Regatta. This win is a morale booster as they look forward to a good showing at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in July.

No. 1 Again

Li Jiawei has regained her status as Singapore's top paddler. This follows the latest world rankings published by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). With her win in the women's singles at the Chile Open, she has jumped two places from eighth in the world rankings. This means she is again the highest-ranked Singapore paddler in the world list, displacing teammate Wang Yuegu.

Bronze Medal

Singapore's US-based gymnast David-Jonathan Chan has become a two-time All-American in his sport. The 23-year-old sophomore at the University of Michigan (UM) has been making his mark in the US collegiate sports scene. Recently, he clinched fifth spot on the pommel horse at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's Gymnastics Championships. Last year, he won a SEA Games bronze in Korat to become our first male gymnast to win a medal at this regional meet in 20 years.
