WELL DONE, PART 2
(Athletics Shine In Various Sports)
By Joshua Tan

Team Singapore athletes have been doing us proud with fine performances in recent competitions. Leading the way are sailors Low Wen Chun and Jonathan Chew who did well in a meet in Holland. Not to be outdone, paddler Li Jiawei has also shown top form. Gymnast David-Jonathan Chan, bodybuilder Tong Chin Wee and the shuttlers have also made the news. In Part One, we look at sailing, table tennis and gymnastics. In Part Two, we focus on badminton and bodybuilding.

Ronald Or Kendrick

Ronald Susilo or Kendrick Lee. That's the stark choice Singapore must make in terms of who we want to represent us in the men's singles at the Beijing Olympics in August. Singapore has also earned qualification spots in three other events: the women's singles and doubles, and the mixed doubles. Xing Aiying (pic, women's singles) , Li Yujia & Jiang Yanmei (women's doubles) and Li & Hendri Supatra (mixed doubles) are expected to earn our selectors' nod.

Muscleman

Bodybuilder Tong Chin Wee shone with fine performances at the 46th National Bodybuilding Championships at the Victoria Theatre. Despite a seven-month lay-off, he proved too good for his opponents. The 34-year-old not only reclaimed the middleweight crown he won in 2006 but defeated winners in the other categories to be crowned Mr Singapore. The 2002 Commonwealth Championships gold medallist who works as a police officer now looks set to make his mark beyond Singapore again.
